Hocoma and Alias Robotics together improving cybersecurity of medical robot exoskeletons

The robotics for rehab manufacturer Hocoma and the cybersecurity company Alias Robotics announces a cooperation to improve cybersecurity of medical exoskeletons.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Switzerland, November 2022.

Hocoma, the global leader of robotic and sensor-based devices for functional movement therapy and a brand from DIH, joined Alias Robotics, global reference in robot cybersecurity solutions, in a cooperation to improve the cybersecurity of medical robotic exoskeletons.

The cooperation is currently focused on compliance aspects with the Medical Device Regulation and its cybersecurity requirements for medical robot manufacturers and includes a device level assessment with Lokomat, the world’s leading robotic medical device that provides highly repetitive and the most physiological gait training.

The Lokomat is a stationary robotic device featuring an electrically powered, computer-controlled gait orthosis, which in conjunction with a body-weight support system assists in gait training on a treadmill. The Lokomat supports the walking movement by guiding the patient’s legs based on a physiological gait pattern and by offering the option of partial dynamic body weight support. This enables intensive rehabilitative gait therapy in adult and pediatric patients with severe to moderate impairments in walking abilities and functional mobility.

Belen Calvo – Technical Project Leader at Hocoma states that “cybersecurity is of utmost importance at Hocoma, and ensuring our exoskeletons are protected against cyber-attacks that could affect our customers is a big priority”. Additionally, the company confirms that the collaboration has substantially raised the internal standards for cyber security related documentation, a key element for compliance with the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR).

Unai Ayúcar CTO at Alias- “Regulation and standards are pressing the robot cybersecurity market increasingly and we are happy to serve the demand for making robots more secure across market segments” and comments that “each market segment moves along its own regulation; IEC62443 (Industrial cybersecurity standard) is demanding a lot from industrial cyber physical device manufacturers, and the medical robot market is highly conditioned by MDR compliance in the EU”

The following years will be also conditioned by emerging regulations such as the EU borne Cyber R esilience act – that provides obligations for (safety) critical product and component manufacturers and highlights more the need for an improved robot cybersecurity “Robot cybersecurity is a matter of great importance on this decade, as these robotic devices increasingly populate our daily lives” highlights Endika Gil-Uriarte CEO at Alias Robotics.
